Ghost proof locks?

April 7, 2013
We answered a call today from a customer who we had worked for previously. Although they were perfectly happy with our work we had to admit that we didn't think we could be of any help on this occasion. Apparently unexplained things were occurring in the customer's house and their CCTV camera system had recorded paranormal activity. We were asked if we could fit locks that would stop this. Unfortunately we do not stock locks that are designed to prevent entry by ghosts or other paranormal beings, although they do keep thieves etc. on the outside.

Are your locks fitted properly

March 24, 2013
We went to a customer today who was locked out because the snib on their night latch wouldn't let them open their door with their key. Usually this happens because the snib drops down when the door is shut due to the lock being worn. However this snib had to be pushed up to lock the latch. The door should not have been able to close in this situation. The reason the door had closed with the snib engaged was because the keep wan't firmly attached to the door frame and had flexed so much when t...

Snapped a key? Don't panic!

February 26, 2013
Twice this week we have been asked to remove broken keys from customers' locks. Both locks were euro cylinders on UPVC doors. At the first job the key had snapped when the customer came home from a night out, their friend had then suggested hammering a screwdriver into the keyway of the lock in order to apply more force to open the door. This had not worked but it had completely mangled the lock meaning that the broken key could not be removed and even if it could another key would not have f...

Where did it come from?

February 12, 2013

We recently got called out by a customer who could not lock their window. It was a tilt and turn window and the handle would not move to lock the window after closing it. When we arrived the customer showed me what they thought was part of the hinge which had fallen off. It turned out not to be part of the hinge but was actually a small part which attaches to the frame of the window. When the window is closed part of the locking mechanism pushes against this part on the frame, if it isn't pus...

Keys stuck in door locks

January 7, 2013

We have been called out twice in the past few days by people whose keys were stuck in the lock. Both of the locks were mortice locks and both keys were very firmly stuck in place. After removing the first jammed key it was found to be the wrong key for the lock. It did look very similar to the correct key so if you have similar keys for different locks then it could be worth making them easy to distinguish from each other by some means. The other jammed key was the correct key for the lock but...

Snap safe locks really do work

December 12, 2012
We got called out today by someone who had lost their keys. Their friend had offered to get them in to their house by snapping the lock. When we arrived the handles had been ripped off the door and the lock had been snapped. The lock in question was an Avocet ABS lock and had done what it is designed to do and had remained locked after being snapped. The customer's friend had then attacked it with a drill but it was still locked, although the damage to the door was quite extensive. All of thi...
